It’s that time of the year when we start drawing up a list of gifts for family and friends. As my extended family reside in Australia I like to find something uniquely Czech to bring over for them. Luckily, there are a lot of good quality Czech made products on offer, for all ages, without the all to familiar ‘Made in China’ tag. Here are a few of my favorite stores where you are guaranteed locally designed and made products.

If you missed seeing the lovely, home made cakes at Expat Expo here is your chance. I was so thrilled about the whole concept that after the Expo I got in touch with Lana and Olga. Home delivered Lanka Cakes are suitable for any party and will save you time. The whole idea was started by two expat girls who both followed their husbands to Prague, met in a classroom while studying Czech, and the idea of a bakery was born shortly after.

Struggling with a hungry, crying child in Mustek I racked my brain to think of a place we could quickly dash into. I’d promised her juice, food and a play area and the place we were heading to had just closed for reconstruction! Aha, a little bird had told me months earlier that there is a non smoking cafe right near Frantiskanska Gardens - and so there is!

Now is our favourite time of the year to visit Pruhonice Park. The air is bracing but fresh, the crowds non-existent and the autumn colours majestic. After our chilly walk (part of which was in the rain) we decided to try lunch at Coloseum which is in the middle of Pruhonice village.

This article lists the numerous private clinics and hospitals that offer help to foreigners who need assistance in English or other languages. Some the medical centres also have 24-hour phone numbers, that you can call if you should require immediate help.

But if your situation is acute, and you urgently need an ambulance, then call: 112 (assistance in English) or 155. By calling 112 the operator will immediatedly connect you to an English speaker. 112 is the emergency number for the Ambulance, Fire and Police.

The kids are going stir crazy at home, you have to get them outside but you can’t bear the thought of freezing in the playgrounds. So be a good parent and reward yourself at the same time by attending one of the weekly performances at Vinohrady’s Kafe Kakao. Depending on the week, kids can take in a Theatre Fairytale in Czech or a Storytelling hour in English, leaving parents free to watch the performances or retreat to the front room for a drink and catch up with friends.
