3rd Annual Bilingual Families Picnic 5th Sept., Prague 1

Events on 31 August 2010 by Larissa

On the 5th September at Kampa Island (near the playground and Kampa Museum) you can join the annual picnic lunch for families living in Prague who are raising their children in more than one language. The weather forecast is looking very promising! However, should the picnic be canceled due to rain, an announcement will be posted on the classacts website by 11 a.m.

Since 2008 a picnic has been held each year honoring cultural diversity by bringing together multi-lingual families in CZ. The event will run officially from 12.30 till 4pm, although people are free to come and go as they please. The picnic is very informal and relaxed, just turn up with your picnic blanket, your lunch and some drinks and freely mingle with your fellow picnickers.

At 3pm there will be a performance by the Class Acts After School English class. In addition, younger kids (2-6) can expect some storytelling and songs, whilst for older kids 7+ and 11+ year olds there will be games, music and/or sports organised. Volunteers are sought to help create and lead activities so if you are able to assist in organising some sport, art, music or games for older or younger kids then please contact .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

The picnic is not just an event to bring together families who speak more than one language, but also a chance to reconnect and compare notes with friends from all over Prague (and beyond) who are bringing up children bilingually. It also gives those children an opportunity to feel part of that broader community once a year, instead of perhaps being a minority in their schools, neighbourhoods etc.

Good news is, if you are like me and could kill for a beer when the sun is out, then you are in luck. The picturesque Mlynska Kavarna can pour you draught beer in a plastic cup that you can take outside and enjoy on your picnic rug. Best to make sure you know where the public toilets have moved to in Kampa (the old toilet block was demolished some time ago)!

So come along and join in some linguistic fun from every corner of the world, meet old friends and make some new ones too!
