UNFORTUNATELY THE BIO CAFE GROUP OF RESTAURANTS HAVE CLOSED FOR BUSINESS DUE TO THE ECONOMIC RECESSION. This is a loss to the city but there are new family friendly venues up and running in the last few months that we plan to bring to your attention. Stay tuned!

Healthy, healthy, healthy and…expensive, but in general a very nice experience. These words pop in my head when recalling my visit to one of the BIO Cafes of Prague. The city has 5 in total and 3 of them have Indoor Play Areas for kids. The one that I visited was in Mala Strana, right near Malostranska metro and directly below Prague Castle.

BIO-Cafes obviously know mothers with children are a good group to target, since every mom wants the best for her baby. That´s why they’ve created play areas a and special kids menu for 79 CZK which includes: pasta Bio salad, fruit Bio mash and Bio juice in a box. I think from now on I can drop the Bio attribute! I have to admit seeing Nicolas sipping the bio juice made me look better in my own eyes (but only for a few seconds, because the next minute I was upset with him for spilling it all over himself).

To make it more interesting you can choose from wide range of sandwiches, soups, fruit salads and juices. I have tried the pasta salad, which didn´t strike me as the most tasteful one (probably because it didn´t have any deep fried bacon in it :-) however, the yellow lentil salad was awesome. The reason why i took both of them was the size of the portion. It looked so small I was sure there was no way I could satisfy my hunger with only one. To my surprise, the lentil salad did the job. Every salad has a small plastic container with Olive Oil attached to it and I poured it over without hesitation. I wish I hadn’t since it dramatically changed the taste of the salad and made it far too oily. I suggest you try it plain without the oil, then add it slowly if necessary. For one salad I payed around 70 - 80 CZK.

I was a bit surprised that the place was so empty. On the other hand, there were no other children for Nikki to hit with toys so I could eat in peace. He was happily playing in the kids corner, going up and down the slide and discovering the Lego table. BIO Cafes’ Internet pages promise that all the surfaces in the play area have an antibacterial layer. Whatever it is - Great! The only issue was an opened door onto the busy street right next to the play area, next visit I would ask them to close it.

Don´t take it for granted that your Credit Card will be accepted. They take cash only and the closest ATM is on the other side of the river or a 15 min walk to Malostranske Square. I learned the hard way when I discovered that I had only 50 CZK in my purse. When you are done you can nip out to the park across the road where there is a very small, fenced playground with slide. Or you can also continue towards Mala Strana along the river, feed the swans and visit the Playground Under Charles Bridge.

Yes, it’s in a handy location and has a cute play area. Just be warned that it gets super busy here during the peak tourist season!
