Cafe Světnička with kids corner, Prague 2

Opening late last year, this kid-friendly cafe is a little gem for parents with children aged 0 to 4 years. The atmosphere is inviting and you feel as if you are relaxing in a family living space. If you are looking for a place to meet up with friends who have toddlers and babies, then give Světnička a go.

I visited Kárvarna Světničkawith my 4 year old son on a cold, windy day, we hung our coats, had lunch and happily took refuge. Centrally located in Korunní Street Vinohrady, roughly half way between Náměstí Míru and Jiřího z Poděbrad metro stops. The street exterior is nothing special but the interior is nice, split into two spaces, the front room is predominately white in a French Provincial style with plenty of tables and the serving counter, the back room has the kids corner and a couple of tables with lounge chairs.

There are a few steps to navigate down to the cafe but i’m sure the staff there will help you if you turn up with a stroller or pram. At the bottom of the stairs they have cleared space for strollers which would probably hold about 4 to 5.

The kids corner is not massive but it’s big and interesting enough for children 4 and under. At first sight it looks kind of bare but there are lots of wall cupboards and hanging baskets holding quite a variety of toys such as lego, wooden blocks, chalk for 2 chalkboards, pencils and colouring in papers, fluffy toys, dolls, baby prams etc. etc. They also have a baby play mat that you can use and a rocking cot for younger babies so they can stretch out or sleep alongside your table! There is also a bookshelf stocked with children’s books (in czech) that you can read to the kids or older kids can take a look through.

I have to say that the lady managing the cafe is lovely and so welcoming. We were treated really well and felt like we could stay on for as long as we liked. The menu features mainly homemade sweet treats, lovely apple crumbles, cakes and sweet pancakes. They do have some savoury meals, I had a savoury pancake which was quite nice along with coffee, my son had apple crumble and a kids chocolate milk cocktail. Yes, they do have a kids menu and the menu is also available in English. If you so desire they have alcoholic drinks too, the mums at the table next to me were enjoying a glass of wine - who can blame them with 4 kids between them, aged 3 and under!

I’m afraid that I did not check out the toilets when I was there so I can’t be certain if there are any changing facilities. It is totally mum and baby-friendly so i’d be surprised if they didn’t.

Just like the nearby Kafe Kakao, Světnička can run birthday parties and you can also reserve the space for mothers groups if you know you are going to have a large group in. A big positive is that the cafe is completely smoke-free, something that is becoming more common in Prague. Check out the cafe’s website photo gallery for birthday party pictures, kids corner in action and food pics.

Unfortunately the cafe is closed and unter construction! :( I don’t know how child-friendly the new one will be or when it will open. The sign said “Kavárna dobrý kafe”.
