Activities, Just for Mums on 07 January 2011 by Larissa

Sadly, Steph is relocating to Switzerland at the end of May so these classes are no longer available. If you know anyone who would like to teach Zumba to a bunch of mums - please let us know ASAP!

Are you feeling lazy and demotivated by the Winter weather or perhaps feel you’ve overindulged in Czech cookies or other Christmas treats? Perhaps you are like me and need to shed a few kilos after having kids or need a bit of ‘me’ time?

I’ve been attending Stephanie’s classes since November and can wholeheartedly recommend them to you. Classes last one hour and for most of this time you are moving and grooving at various paces despite possible lack of co-ordination or limited fitness. It helps to have a sense of humor because you will make mistakes - but don’t worry everyone does and as a result it’s quite a riot at times as we stumble through a particular challenging routine.

Thankfully Steph mixes it up and you learn the steps before each dance and many are at a slower pace. I have to admit that I have never been great with co-ordination or remembering dance moves but I can see that I am slowly progressing over time.

Steph is a great teacher and we are even more spoilt as she is authentic Latino (originally from Mexico) thus she demonstrates with perfection how to dance with your whole body using a combination of samba, zamba (Brasil), cumbia (Mexican and Columbian), Regetton (Latin America) and Belly Dancing. I must say Latina girls really know where their hips are and how to use them - for the rest of us (a mix of Anglo, Japanese, North American and European) it comes with much practice!

Fusing of Latin rhythms and middle eastern flavours through a great contemporary soundtrack really help inspire and make you workout and have fun - all at the same time. Remember to bring some kind of trainer shoes for dancing in (clean ones, not your street shoes), bottled water (although water is supplied if you forget - and you will need it!) and maybe a hand towel to dry off perspiration during and after class. Some of us (like me!) also wear Belly Dancing coin belts to help us use our hips. Steph will be able to tell you where to find one in Prague - I know there are places in Prague 2/3 and also Prague 6 that sell them.

If like me you have a baby, toddler or preschooler then the class at RC Palicek is best for you as the exercise room is just off a fantastic playroom complete with babysitters that Steph organises. Ari loves coming here each week, he is particularly taken with the ball pit. I usually pack him some snacks and water which I leave with the babysitters and so far it has been a great success. The good thing is that if your child is upset the sitter will come and get you so you need not worry about leaving them. This babysitting costs an additional 50czk which is great value and really allows new mums the opportunity to rejuvenate mind and body. Palecek also allows Mums and kids to stay on afterwards to enjoy the toys and small snack bar.
