Guest Report by Rachel de Candole

There’s a great opportunity for children to ride and receive top quality instruction in English, Czech, Dutch, German, French or Spanish in the village of Trebichovice, not far from Kladno and only 15 minutes from Prague airport.

The stables are at an old mill set in apple orchards; it is friendly and relaxed and offers superb horses and excellent tuition, available for beginners as well as advanced riders (both adults and children).

The stables are owned and run by Katerina Hlavova, a Czech who grew up in Holland where she competed in dressage at the highest levels. Katerina and her partner Pavel Vokoun, a Czech stuntman who works with horses a great deal (and whose work you and your children may well have seen in A Knight’s Tale, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Prince Caspian and many more!) have superbly bred and schooled horses of various breeds (most of whom starred in Prince Caspian!) and are available for teaching adults and older children.

For smaller children there is currently one lovely Welsh Mountain pony, a perfect responsive ride for a child with some experience rather than a complete beginner since he is young. My 7 year-old son who has ridden quite a lot loves riding him and manages him very well. My 3 year-old daughter is probably a bit too lively for him at the moment, but she can enjoy grooming and cuddling him, since he meets all the necessary pony requirements there!

If you or your child is riding for the first time then please be sure to wear shoes with smooth soles and to bring a cycling helmet to protect your head. It is important to wear comfortable trousers, preferably not jeans as the seams can rub your legs. Be sure to inform the stables of your child’s experience and age to ensure that they will be suited to the right mount.

The stables also offer accompanied rides outside of the yard. The local terrain is varied and very good for riding, local tracks lead through both woods and open fields.
