Looking for a special occasion venue where you can head with the kids? Why not try the La Rotonde Restaurant, located on the ground floor of the luxury Radisson SAS Alcron Hotel close to Wenceslas Square. Here they serve the popular Sunday Jazz Brunch every Sunday from noon until 3.30pm. The ‘all you can eat’ buffet takes you on a tempting tour of the world’s cuisines while you enjoy the subtle swing of live Jazz Music.
This posh Art Deco restaurant certainly does not portray itself as a family eatery in any way but children are definitely not forgotten. There is a room (with a door) directly attached to the restaurant which is set up as a medium-sized play area. It houses a slide, a round table with chairs along with colour-in equipment. There is also a play-station console as well as a DVD player and TV.
When we went, perhaps the best thing of all was presence of a very capable and friendly baby-sitter (bi-lingual in Czech and English), supervising the children at all times. Once the boys had finished their lunches (which was within 15 minutes of our arrival), they both went off to the play area and us adults were left to enjoy the culinary delights that were on offer.
The brunch was buffet style specializing in fresh seafood. Directly at the entrance was a mouth-watering sushi and sashimi counter staffed by a sushi chef, who was constantly producing new maki, sushi and even sashimi on request. There were several stations serving many sorts of salads, fresh oysters, fresh soup, gravlax, salmon, octopus, tuna and much more. For mains, there was a ‘live’ cooking station, where a couple of chefs staffed a carvery as well as offering to cook-up mouth watering seafood dishes to guests on demand. I had fresh garlic prawns with chilli which was very fresh and tasty.
There were a further four or five options for mains ranging from roasted duck with red cabbage and dumplings to cannelloni filled with shrimps and leek. The desert and fruit table was exquisite as was the fresh bread and cheese station. A wide selection of ice creams was also available.
The only down-side was the lack of special meals for children. If your children will consume anything and everything and are open to new tastes and foods then great – you’ll have no problem feeding them here. My boys however, have rather simple tastes and were not that impressed by the delices on offer. Luckily, the kitchen had no problem preparing 2 bowls of penne (free of charge) and managed to do so in less than 10 minutes. A nice bonus for the children, was also the fact that all soft drinks as well as an unlimited supply of apple and orange juice (self-service) were available as part of the final price.
Although the brunch played host to a relatively large number of children, there still seemed to be very little ‘mayhem’ or noise, that is often associated with other traditional Family Brunch-type of establishments. For little ones, there were several baby-chairs as well as changing facilities available in the toilet (female only).
The staff members were pleasant, friendly as well as attentive. This along with the live jazz band all helped to make the entire brunch experience with our kids at the ‘Radisson’ relaxing and enjoyable.
