Tretters Cafe Palladium with play area, Prague 1
For families that haven’t discovered it yet; on the top floor of the Palladium Shopping Mall in the centre of Prague you’ll find Tretters Cafe with a small play area. Small is the right word and it is more suitable for smaller kids (ideal for kids up to 2 years) as older kids would be probably able to climb over the low wall that surrounds the play are.
We’ve held our Mothers Group there a few times and fully appreciated this place. The thing is there aren’t that many places in the centre where you can meet up with kids when the weather gets bad. Lately things have got a lot better when they opened the Indoor Playground at Kotva Mall all which is right opposite The Palladium.
Yet again I cannot think of many other cafes where you can unleash your kids and enjoy your coffee at the same time. Or let me rephrase… a place where your kids wont run away and are easily manageable. (Tip from Larissa: a close contender would be Kanzelsburger Bookstore at Mustek)
I want to keep my story on Tretter’s brief after my long entry on the Dino World in Pilsen when I spent a half a day searching on Internet for Dinosaur species. When I looked through my past photos for story ideas I chose this as I knew it would require just a brief description and when I look at the picture below it brings back such nice memories.
Larissa - on the left, my dear colleague and friend delivered her second baby just 2 months ago. When this picture was taken she had only little Lucinka and no talk of any other babies!
The Smiling Lady and my dear friend in the middle is Suzanne. Again - she now has a second child - a daughter that she was expecting when the photo was taken is now a fine little 11 month old sweetheart and Debs - on the right, delivered 5 months ago, the sweetest baby boy ever named Joseph. So much happiness at once. All of them live in Prague with their editions, enjoying the beauty of the City. Funny to think how time really goes by, 3 ladies in the picture having only one baby each, a year later all of them have 2. Well done girls! :-)
Oh, not to neglect the Tretter’s drinks list containing specialties which are popular among expectant or breastfeeding mothers and which you will find hard to obtain elsewhere. Drinks such as Ovomaltina, healthy Melta, Caro, Vitakáva, Chicory or Chaipur (ajurveda mixture of tea, Indian spices and milk) give you many options apart from coffee. Also, every gourmet would be pleased with the breakfast menu served during the morning hours from 10.00 to 12.00. The menu also covers kids too – from breakfast through to light snacks and drinks.
The cafe also provides to its customers free WIFI as well as daily newspapers and has it’s own toilets on premises.

I went to Tretter`s yesterday and was pretty disappointed. The small play area looked like someone had dumped their no longer wanted and broken toys. Our daughter was not very intrigued by this and kept climbing the small wall to run off to the more interesting electrical train and bus which are now located in the place where the self-service restaurant “Taste of the World” used to be. As it was dinner time we ordered some of Tretter´s food which was mediocre, to say the least. Unless Tretter´s cleans up their play area and renews the toys I will only go back there for an emergency coffee.

Hi Julia. Thanx for the comment. Shame you have such experience :-( the thing is - there are so little places in the center especially in this area that we have decided to put this Cafe up.
I have taken some pictures of the new electrical cars and train last time I went to Tretters and will upload it soon.
I don’t really understand why a big Shopping Centre such as Palladium doesn’t make the effort and open a Indoor Playground. When the “Taste the World” restaurant was open - there was at least where to go with kids - now it got limited to Tretters :-(
I am thinking of writing an email to the owners to make the play area cleaner and better equipped.

I was thinking about contacting the owners as well because I am currently working on the update of a kids´ guide to Prague and am not sure if I want to include Tretters because it is in such bad shape.
I also don´t understand why Palladium does not provide more child-friendly facilities. Maybe we are not the target group?
But I remember leaning over the banister to the left from the main entrance and seeing a cafe with a small kid´s corner on the lowest floor. Unfortunately, I never made it down there and never checked again if it was still there. Do you know anything about it?
Darina on 12 September 2009 @ 10:07 PM
The IWAP guide? We are contributing as well :-))
Its a good thing to hear that also someone else cares and makes the effort to write to the owners. Very often I get the feeling I am the only one to stir the waters :-( :-))
i think we should and also to Palladium.
I visit Palladium often, lat time I have been there was 3 weeks ago but don’t know anything about the Cafe with Play area. If so - must be recent. Down there there is a Cafe with two life size statues of horses with lamp on their heads….. called art…....
this cafe also has colorful plastic dogs as a decoration.
Maybe this was what you saw?
If No - we should cover it :-)
Have you experiences the Indoor Playground in Kotva we are mentioning?
Julia on 12 September 2009 @ 10:36 PM
I know you are contributing to the IWAP guide as I am the one who contacted you :-) and I am more than grateful for your generosity!
Now, I am no longer sure about what I saw down at Palladium. But this will just make me want to go back there rather sooner than later to finally check it out. I will let you know if I do.
Reg. Kotva`s Detsky Koutek: we went there last week and your piece on it fully covers what I experienced. We went there on a Saturday one hour before Kotva closes. The lady behind the counter let my daughter in for free because it was already late. Nice piece of service! I also love Kotva for its variety of shops. Whenever I need something I cannot find anywhere else, I go to Kotva and can usually get it there. Thanks for giving such a detailed account of it´s shops.

Really? Well i hope we will meet when I get back to Prague form Krakow - where we currently live. We are moving back at the end of September.
Karen (she covered the DK in KOTVA) is a very good writer :-) She actually just finished a book for Kids. Maybe it could be also mentioned in the Guide? :-)
You see I am more Sales and Marketing out of 3 of us :-)))
I was just wondering - wouldnt you mind copying your comment about Kotva under the article about it? It would help our readers - every opinion counts :-)))
Julia on 13 September 2009 @ 07:52 PM
It would be nice to meet when you are back. You have my e-mail, I guess.
I`ll contact Karen about the book.
And my comment on Kotva is where it belongs :-)

I just can’t understand all those moanings about little playgrounds in the shopping malls etc. Take your child for a walk, to the zoo, to Detsky ostrov- plenty of places for the CHILD. The idea of children being some kind of an accesorie that you take anywhere just drives me mad…little infants hanging ot their mother’s hands while they shop…just think of how overcrowded, full of patogenes ( for a still vulnerable immunity) and unhealthy malls are. Not to speak of entrances which are always full of cigarette smoke.

Well, I can say from my part - I do take my Kids out a lot. Yet again - I also like to have my life with my friends and during winter - Cafes with play areas are the best. Better then cafes without play areas :-D I personally think kids should go every where where the parents go to learn what life is about. Too bad, if we need to buy new shoes and I have no-where to put them - they come with.
Of course, nobody should over do it. But - with good ballance I dont have problems with Kids in shopping malls.
